Reimagining Higher Education and Corporate Learning Through Innovation

How Edify Helped Lumerit Expand LMS Compatibility and Enhance Content Flexibility

Lumerit Education is transforming higher education and corporate learning with student-centric educational systems and services. By addressing the challenges of college degree completion and affordability, Lumerit empowers learners in consumer, corporate, and international markets. Its proprietary technology platform and extensive course library enable students to earn transferable credits and partner institutions to offer competitive degrees and learning paths. Through its Learning Solutions division, Lumerit also equips small and midsized colleges to thrive in the digital era of education.

The Challenge

Lumerit Education needed a solution to align and transfer its extensive course material seamlessly across multiple Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Canvas, Blackboard, and Moodle.

The challenge was twofold:

  1. Develop a tool to transform and structure the curricula of Lumerit’s proprietary LMS to ensure compatibility with these platforms.
  2. Enable small to midsized colleges and employers to customize degree or learning paths while maintaining seamless integration with various LMS platforms.

To achieve this, Lumerit turned to Edify Software Consulting to build a robust, scalable tool that could bridge its proprietary system with widely used LMS platforms.

The Solution

The project, codenamed Uhaul, represented Lumerit’s ambitious effort to decouple and standardize their course content for broader accessibility.

Edify collaborated with Lumerit to develop a comprehensive solution that decoupled course content from its proprietary LMS and made it compatible with leading LMS platforms.

The project was divided into two major milestones:

Mobile Devices

Key features

Exporting Course Content:

  • Edify first analyzed Lumerit’s proprietary LMS to understand its course structure, content delivery logic, and data model.
  • Using this knowledge, Edify developed a tool to export course content into IMS Common Cartridge packages. This standardized format ensured compatibility with platforms like Canvas, Blackboard, and Moodle.

Importing to Common Library:

  • Edify built a tool to import these Common Cartridge packages into Common Library, an open-source learning content management system developed by Edify. This repository enabled Lumerit to:
    • Align content with learning objectives and standards.
    • Organize content into curricula for better structure and usability.
  • Common Library was integrated back to the LMS via Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI), creating a seamless workflow for managing and delivering content.

Technologies used

  • Lumerit’s LMS: PHP, MySQL
  • Content Conversion Scripts: Groovy
  • Common Library: Java, Groovy, Node.js
  • Data Storage: MongoDB, Redis, Elasticsearch, Amazon S3, OrientDB
  • EdTech Standards: SCORM, IMS Common Cartridge, LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability)
